Another bucket list hotel which looks as if it is on top of a mountain…not far wrong!
Arrival
Extremely happy to arrive after driving for over 9 hours from Amritsar, the final leg up into the Himalayas was stressful.
Not a grand welcome, obviously these only happen in Rajasthan, and we met with the usual non smoking room which was quickly sorted out.
Room
Quite a bland traditionally furnished room but large enough, very clean and comfortable with a separate wardrobe area and reasonable size bathroom with separate toilet, separate shower, one sink and bathtub. Lovely views over the mountains.
Size: 43 sqm

Dining
You are really a captive audience but luckily the food is excellent along with the service.
Breakfast can be taken on the outside terrace and it is good, buffet and a la carte including eggs benedict. Evenings meals were also very good and the waiters are helpful with selections.
Our one mishap was for Jon’s Birthday dinner which we are now resigned to be a disaster when I plan a special meal but they did know they had messed up so this was removed from our final bill without question.
We took Afternoon Tea on the lawn in front of the hotel and it was a good attempt, the location made it special.
Service
As usual excellent Oberoi service.
Amenities
Indoor Swimming Pool
Shops - good selections
Spa
Snooker and Billiards Room
Library
Tours, Mountain Biking and Picnics are available.
We did the river rafting which was brilliant and included a tent and lunch served at the side of the river. Just be prepared for a exhilarating car ride to get there.
Restaurants / Bar
The Restaurant - fine dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner
The Cavalry Bar - Coffee, Tea and alcoholic drinks
As a quick note - you may notice a guard patrolling the grounds with a Langur monkey on a long leash, they are there to scare away the local troup of Macaques who have become very adept at relieving you of your belongings!
Conclusion
Beautiful hotel in an amazing location, rooms are comfortable, food is excellent and service top class, certainly the best place to stay if you visiting Shimla. Very glad we went but doubtful we would return to Shimla again.
