Laos - lost in time

Surrounded by 5 larger neighbours, this tiny mountainous country has a french influence but is less developed tourist wise making it more laid back and perfect place to see the natural beauty of the region.  French colonial architecture, Buddhist monasteries and hill tribes can be seen along with beautiful countryside.

In 1953 the country gained independence from France as a constitutional monarchy but after a series of conflicts King Savang Vatthana was forced to abdicate, he later died in prison and in 1975 the country became the Lao People's Democratic Republic and a socialist state.  Its involvement in the Vietnam War caused two million tons of bombs being dropped making it the most heavily bombed country in history with 80 million bombs failing to explode leaving vast areas of land uncultivated and killing the local population every year.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Luang Prabang is the main tourist destination which has a relaxing feel even when busy with tourists.

Visit Vientiane, the capital to see gibbons at the Bokeo Nature Reserve or travel down the Mekong and stay on one of 4000 islands for a relaxed beach break.

Trekking and Hill Tribe visits are other options for tourists along with wildlife and tiger spotting in Nam Et-Phou Louey.

Laos is perfect for culture and adventure, go before it becomes too developed.
