Singapore girls shopping trip what to wear and where to go for bargains

Singapore - the Garden City

One of the great cities in Asia…the Garden City…and it certainly is green and clean!

People either love it or hate it…I am in the love it group. Why? It is clean and normal which is a godsend after Thailand, add to that great shopping, good restaurants, and everything works.

There is a huge choice of hotels from budget to 5 star, the area you want to stay will dictate which one. Down at the Marina you have the landmark Marina Bay Towers, the huge impersonal hotel is only worth staying at to use the infinity edge pool on the top floor so one night will suffice as you can go up there to the restaurant if you just want the views. Other hotels in the area are the Mandarin Oriental and the Fullerton Bay, these are better choices.

For shopping Orchard Road is the place to stay, again a number of luxury hotels in the area, the Shangri La and the Regent being our choices.

Getting around is easy and not that expensive, the only issue with the taxis is getting one at peak times so having Grab is useful plus you also have the MRT although we have never used it.

Nightlife is great, lots of nightclubs, many rooftop bars with amazing views over the city and top class restaurants or hawker centres for local food.

For tourists there is a lot to see and do and it is a good base to see the rest of the region with most international and budget airlines flying in.

So what more could you want!

Where to Stay

All the luxury brands are here as well as smaller boutique options, your choice should be based on budget as the transport system is so good.

Many want to stay at the Marina Bay Sands so they can use the pool but remember this is a huge impersonal hotel, very busy and only the top rooms are worth the effort, poorly rated. For a similar view try the Mandarin Oriental which overlooks the Singapore Flyer, Gardens by the Bay and marina, service is not brilliant though.

To be on Orchard Road, the Marriott Tang Plaza has the one of the best positions but rooms and service are nothing to shout about, they do have a nice bar/restaurant at street level where you can watch the world go by!

Raffles is the Iconic hotel which has recently been refurbished and is getting excellent reviews. Another colonial hotel is The Goodwood Park just off Orchard so great location and they have one of the best afternoon teas here.

The Regent and Four Seasons are a few minutes from Orchard, we have just stayed at The Regent and were very happy. The FS needs a refurb so best to avoid until this is done.

Down by the marina you have The Fullerton which gets complaints about noisy plumbing due to being an old building and then there is the new Fullerton Bay hotel across the street which has great views so that would be a better choice.

The Shangri La Valley Wing and the Capella Singapore with their Club Residences being one of the most expensive places to stay, are the hotels used by the celebs and visiting VIPs.

Boutique options are Naumi, The Scarlet, Six Senses Duxton and The Vagabond Club.

Chinatown

Visit the Chinese Heritage Centre, Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple and the Buddha Tooth Relic temple as well as walking the streets which have small local shops and authentic Chinese food outlets.  Head to the Ann Siang Hill area for small boutiques and cafes.

Shopping

Where to start….Orchard Road is home to a number of Shopping Malls and stores.  Top of the list are Paragon and Ion.  You can spend a day on just this section starting at Tangs with a quick division down Scott's Road to the Christian Louboutin store, then walking up to Paragon, crossing over to Takashimaya/Ngee Ann City and walking back down to Ion.  Every top brand is here plus lots of little shops on the underground walkway through Isetan to Ion (beware even I get confused in Ion).  Further down from Paragon is the Robinsons Department Store (my current favourite for shoes) and there is a huge H & M and Victoria’s Secret opposite and the flagship store of Michael Kors to try and pass on your way back to Takashimaya....lethal!

Some of the older Malls are full of independent shops and check out City Hall for something different.

Other Malls to look at are:

VivoCity - younger Fashion

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands - more upmarket.

Suntec City - big H & M here

Bargains can be found on a number of designer items, try the department stores Metro, Isetan and Robinsons as well as the brand shops.

Timeout is a good site to check on new places to shop and also to find hairdressers and nail shops but for beauty stuff such as waxing, eyebrows etc look in Paragon.

Tax Refunds - there is a new app available (tourego) for information on the Tax Refund process, shopping deals and offers plus once registered it should record all your purchases. If this is not ready by the time you visit try the Global Blue app which a lot of stores use at the moment. Make sure you take your passport with you when shopping, they do not accept copies on your phone. Do keep your receipts together or make a list because when you get to the refund area you need to check them off against the screen. Also be prepared to have to show items to the inspectors if you are 'randomly' selected.

Restaurants & Bars

There is a vast choice of places to eat to suit all budgets from the Hawker stalls to top class restaurants opened by celebrity chefs. Quality is always changing, one of our favourite restaurants was pretty dire on the last visit.

The in place at the moment is Atlas but you need to book well in advance.  Huge selection of gin and excellent food.

English House - our first visit was excellent, the second time again the food and service is top class but it was freezing cold in there.

Lavo - Italian restaurant at the top of the Marina Bay Sands...spectacular views and decent food.  Ladies get free flow sparkling wine from 6 pm for the price of two glasses.

Lantern - Restaurant and bar at the Fullerton Bay Sands - again great views and good food. Also nice for just a drink.

Mr Stork - rooftop bar at Andaz Hyatt - great views again with tepees to sit in. Opposite Atlas so eat and then drink the night away. Walk in only.

Altitude - supposedly the highest al fresco bar in the world and yes brilliant views over the city.  Entrance fee which includes two free drinks, food available and DJ's.

Singapore Travel Tips

During the day casual wear is good for sightseeing or shopping and comfortable shoes, you can easily well do over 10 km on Orchard alone…..  shorts, skirts, T-shirts, cotton dresses, anything goes really except beachwear, reserve that for around the pool! At night you can dress up, many do especially for the top restaurants, bars and nightclubs, Clark’s Quay is more casual. Also check the dress code of the hotel you are staying at, some are strict for the lounges.

One important thing to remember is that if you intend to go shopping then pack as little as possible unless you do not mind excess luggage charges! On one trip I managed to buy 8 pairs of shoes, then 3 handbags, 2 pairs of boots, as well as stocking up at Victoria’s Secret. Luckily my son was on a day visa run so I filled his bag up with the Xmas cake and pudding from Marks & Sparks.

This trip only one pair of boots BUT 3 handbags, 5 tops, 3 dresses, a leather jacket, jeans and jewellery as well as getting my ears pierced and we actually missed a day shopping...read why in the latest report. I really did not intend buying anything this time so overpacked ... Singapore can be very dangerous!

Not required for most visitors.

  • 2 litres Wine/1 Litre Beer OR
  • 1 Litre Wine/2 litres Beer

Getting here:

By Plane - Most international airlines fly to Changi Airport

By Sea - Ferries run to Malaysia (Johor) and Indonesia (Riau Islands). Singapore is also a stop off for cruises.

By Coach - from Malaysia

By Train - from Malaysia. You also have the option of the Eastern and Oriental Express which stops in Kuala Lumpur or passes on to Bangkok.

By Car - Two checkpoints open 24 hours a day when entering from Malaysia. Foreign registered vehicles have to have a valid Autopass available online and insurance

Airport transfers - taxis are the easiest option but buses are available from 6 am to 11.59 pm, exact change required.  There is an MRT train which runs between T1 and T3 but you need to change at Tanah Merah to catch the one going to the city.  It runs fro 5.31 am to 11.18 pm and is very crowded during peak times.

Taxis are metered but there are surcharges.  Use the taxi stands but at peak times or change of shifts they are hard to get and sometimes they will not take you if it is out of their way.  This is where wifi comes in useful, download the grab taxi app.  Beware of the white, white and black and the red taxis, the first two overcharge and the second are supposed to be the rejected drivers.

GRAB

Buses and MRT -

Extensive networks to major attractions.  Single tickets available or buy a Tourist Pass.  Cards can be bought at Changi or certain stations.

TOURIST PASS

Singapore Dollar - change your currency at the ATM’s or the currency exchanges, hotels have bad rates.

Hot and humid all year round, rain can be heavy but usually over quickly. This year we did experience the smog coming from Borneo and there were warnings to wear masks.

The great thing about Singapore is the amount of info you can get onto your phone from maps to restaurant and food guides.  Visit this site to get the apps and info.
