Nagaur Fort, Nagaur, India

Fort of the Hooded Cobra

Nagaur is home to the historically important Ahhichatragarh Fort which translates into Fort of the Hooded Cobra and occupies 36 acres within the city.  Nagaur itself is an ancient town located on a flat plain but on the trade routes from the north so required protection hence a fort.  Over the centuries the town and fort witnessed many battles and different rulers and has been mainly under Mughal control but administered by Rajput rulers.

Dating back to 4 AD and added to and rebuilt over time the fort is a fine example of Rajput-Mughal architecture with palaces, mosques, temples, open terraces and gardens. It is also one of the first Muslim strongholds in northern India slowly falling into disrepair until in 1985 it has slowly been restored to its former glory with the Queen’s palace being turned into the luxury hotel Ranvas.

Many visitors now come for the Sufi Music Festival held every year, dates for 2020 are 10th to 12th February.

Conclusion

A unique experience not to be missed if travelling in Rajasthan. Unfortunately I cannot give information on each building within the fort as we could not understand anything the guide said and the on site book shop was closed so we could not even buy a guide book.
